How to Keep Your ragwear Jacket Looking Great

Ordered online, unpacked, tried on – and instantly in love? We get it. A ragwear jacket isn’t just stylish and comfortable, it’s the kind of piece you want to wear again and again. And that’s exactly how it should be! To make sure your jacket sticks with you for many seasons to come, it needs a little care – but don’t worry: with just a few easy tips, your jacket will stay fresh, functional, and in great shape. Plus, you'll be doing the environment a favour.

Less is more - Especially When Washing

Let’s be honest: your jacket doesn’t need a wash after every wear. In fact, that often does more harm than good. Frequent washing can strain the materials and reduce their water-repellent properties. Much better: air it out regularly or spot-clean smaller stains. Only reach for the washing machine when it’s truly necessary.

The Care Label Is Your Best Friend

Before you do anything, take a look inside your jacket. The care label gives you valuable information: What materials were used? What’s the recommended washing temperature? Is tumble drying allowed? These details help you avoid mistakes – and protect your jacket in the long run.

Small Stains? No Stress!

If there’s just a small mark, all you usually need is a gentle detergent, a soft brush, and a little patience. Gently rub the affected area – and you’re done! This way, you can often avoid washing the whole jacket.

Before Washing: Prep Is Everything

Before tossing your jacket in the machine:

  • Close all zippers, buttons, and Velcro – this protects the fabric.
  • Turn it inside out – this helps preserve prints, labels, and other details.
  • If you have a laundry bag: use it. It’s gentler on the fibres – and helps protect the environment from microplastics.

Wash Gently – and Dry Properly

Use a delicate or gentle cycle at no more than 30 °C. Skip the bleach and definitely avoid fabric softeners – they clog the pores of breathable materials and can affect performance. After washing:

  • Hang your jacket up to air dry.
  • Avoid direct sunlight or heat from radiators.
  • Once it’s dry, give it a good shake – this helps restore the fibres.

Reproofing for Lasting Protection
If your jacket is water-repellent, it’s a good idea to reproof it after a few washes. This keeps its protective finish intact. Look for a specialised spray – ideally one that’s eco-friendly and free from harmful chemicals.

Better Care Than Replacement
With the right care, your ragwear jacket will stay beautiful, functional, and cosy for a long time – perfectly in line with a more sustainable lifestyle. And honestly, is there anything better than wrapping yourself up year after year in your favourite, well-loved piece?
